The Wine

Most fans of my wines have likely heard about, or tasted, or are collecting, the wines of Spain's Rioja region. But even at this exalted level of experience it is not uncommon to assume the famed Tempranillo grape is the highest expression of the region. This unique wine, from the obscure Maturana grape, gives it a run for its money. And for MY money, I'll take the satisfaction provided by the Maturana, thank you very much. Deep and dark color combines with a peppery nose and an unmistakable Riojan fruit expression!

The Winery

Vina Ijalba (VEEN-ya eee-HALL-bah) is a thoroughly modern Rioja producer, carrying the banner for sustainability in the region since their founding in the 70's. They lead by example - from organic production (Rioja's first certification, in 1994) to extensive recycling programs to their environmental certification. Ijalba has undertaken a mission to resurrect this almost extinct variety, nurturing the world's only known Maturana vineyard - just over two hectares (~5 Acres). And yet, it is the grape variety with the oldest known citation in all of Rioja - a written reference dating back to 1622.
