Richard Davis, the winemaker at
Calstar, is no rookie. His resume includes stints at such notable
brands as Londer Vineyards, Halleck Vineyards, Flowers Vineyard and
Winery, Smith and Hook/Hahn Estates, and Tandem Winery. So it comes
as no surprise that he has a Sangiacomo bottling among his pinots
under his new Calstar label.
In this case, the vineyard in
question is the Roberts Road vineyard, just at the top of the
Petaluma Gap. This vineyard is one of many owned by the Sangiacomo
family, and it is destined for greatness, I predict. The vineyard,
part of the Sonoma Coast Appellation, is cooled by the breezes
(Winds? Gales?? If you've ever stood in this area around
mid-afternoon, you could lose your hat!) coming through the gap
directly from the Pacific.
This micro-climate supports a
slow maturation that produces optimum ripeness by allowing the
nuanced flavors of the pinot noir grape to ripen along with the
rising sugars. In areas where temperatures are warmer, the grape's
sugars can develop too quickly, demanding that harvest occur
(because, if the sugars get too high the alcohol is out of balance
with Pinot's subtle flavors) before the grapes full flavors have
had a chance to develop.
Tasting
Notes:
Dark ruby color. Aromas of floral (rose, violet) underneath
fresia/strawberry and cedar forest. The palate begins with fruit
flavors dominated by ripe red cherries. Well-integrated, sweet
tannins lead the long and lively finish.
