This luxury class wine is from a category known as "Farmer Fizz", as it is produced by the families that grow the grapes - the Chartognes and the Taillets. Their estate vineyards can be found in the villages of Merfy, Chenay and St. Thierry.
On the caliber of the Grand Marques champagnes, you'll pay less for this wine because the producers focus on nothing but the wine itself, leaving advertising, sales and distribution to others. Unique and distinct.
Wine Information from importer Terry Thiese:
The Wine - In the absolute top class among entry-level
grower-Champagnes; I mean, who has better NV Brut than this??? Now 60% 2013 and
20% each of ’12 and ’11, it’s 65-35 PN/CH. Very dry (could be “Extra
Brut”), this is an elegant ,straight-lined and silky wine, as graceful and
balanced and tasty as they come. Incisive and classy, chiseled and vaporous,
with an aerial solidity.
The Grower - Fiacre
Taillet, winegrower in Merfy in 1485, was the first of a long line of family
winegrowers in Merfy. A later Fiacre Taillet, a descendent born in 1700, was an
enlightened winemaker who wrote extensive memoirs about his life and his work,
as well as the economic, political and cultural environment of the region in
the early 18th century. Following this, first Laurent, then Antoine Taillet
continued to write logs, passing the family tradition on from father to son,
one generation to the next. Today, Alexandre Chartogne-Taillet maintains
written logs of his own, as his parents Philippe and Elisabeth did before him.
Since 2006, Alexandre has been dedicated to the family's work, seeking to share
with you the wines of the village of Merfy.
