Oddly enough, this Pinot was discovered at a tasting of Cabernets
from Napa’s various mountaintop vineyards. It was the sole Pinot at
the tasting; perhaps a brash move, but one you’d expect from a
winery whose motto is “Swim against the flow”.
With almost 60 years of winemaking experience between Gary Lipp
and his business partner, Bruce Painter, they chose a Coho salmon
for their label because of their shared belief that “As stewards
of the land, winemakers must strive to sustain our habitat and the
species that share it.” Read their formative Celtic legend

This wine comes from the Green Valley sub-appellation within
Russian River Valley, famous for its cool climate and sandy-loam
Gold ridge soils that provide excellent drainage and low soil
fertility. LOW fertility?? Why is that good? It reduces the vine’s
natural enthusiasm for fruit production and results in fewer but
more flavorful grapes.
The Galante Vineyard sits in the heart of this small Green
Valley appellation, producing Pinot Noir with wonderfully intense
fruit aromas and bright flavors. The wine has pure black cherry and
ripe plum aromas, with hints of fragrant dried hibiscus, cedar and
cigar box. The rich entry on the palate continues all the way to
the finish, which features supple tannins and a lush texture. COHO
has a reputation for nurturing wines that are full-flavored and
easy to enjoy, gaining a fair share of accolades in the
process.
