The Wine

Cabernet Franc is common in the Right Bank of Bordeaux, where it is blended with Merlot. It is also common in the Loire Valley, where it is the primary red varietal. But Cabernet Franc from these two regions are entirely different tasting experiences - with Bordeaux being riper/more robust wines and the Loire wines more lean and earthy.

In this California rendition, John Skupny (Lang & Reed's owner/Winemaker) combines California's ripe juiciness with Cabernet Franc's natural green tea characteristics. The result is this cherry-inflected red wine that seemingly pairs with everything. This has been my favorite domestic Cab Franc for about as long as I can remember.

The Winery

Tracey & John Skupny started Lang & Reed Napa Valley in 1993. Their objective was well-defined - to explore the distinct charms of Cabernet Franc and to craft a wine that gave the varietal its highest possible expression.

The two began in the world of fine dining in Kansas City, where they served as wine stewards. Eventually, California wineries beckoned and the couple settled into Napa Valley by 1984. While there, they were struck by the huge variation in aromatics and flavors that came from the Cabernet Franc grape. After years of expoloration, in 1993 they finally crafted a wine that was true to type, redolent in aroma, and pure in flavor, all the while maintaining balance and structure. Lang & Reed Napa Valley was born, and the rest is history.

Named after their two sons, J Reed and Jerzy Lang (who is now involved in the winery with his wife Megan), Lang & Reed Napa Valley is commited to remaining family-owned and operated.
