I first tasted the gems of Lopez de Heredia at a recent “Top 100” tasting hosted by Wine Enthusiast in San Francisco. This impressive tasting features the top producers from around the world, and the Heredia wines were among the standouts (I’ll always remember their white wine they poured there from the 1961 vintage, a marvel like no other I’ve tasted. Current price for a bottle? Just this side of a grand). And Heredia is always on the short list of great Riojas.

Now, I’m not brilliant, but here is one thing I’ve learned during my many solar orbits – it’s a good idea to buy the entry-level wine from the world’s best producers, especially if the winery is still FAMILY OWNED (corporate-owned wineries rarely protect a brand's reputation with the same fierceness).

Heredia humbly and consistently produces some of the most expensive, long-lived and truly astounding wines the world has to offer. At auction, their wines can sell for a thousand bucks a bottle.

Not this one. It's downright affordable. Offers aromas/flavors of warm leather, earth, licorice, tobacco, herby underbrush. Buy one now and cellar for a decade+.
