The Wine
A delicious blend of six red grapes, including four Bordeaux varietals with Syrah and Tempranillo. The cool weather growing conditions create a wine with herbacious notes and aromatics - not in an under-ripe way, in a savory "
I want this with food
" kind of way. Most appealing.
Though this wine is from Northern Italy, it's so close to the German border that the area's residents draw their cultural heritage from both sides of the border, in their food, language and even their vineyard names (here, "Seehof" and "Panholzerhof"!). It is also the source of three of my best-selling wines.
Demeter-certified organic, native yeast fermentations. Best if served around 60-64 (F), and, if opened before 2025, decant for an hour before serving. Drink now through 2025.
The Winery
"
Though heritage is not a burden, it imposes obligations
". Not a surprising point of view for a winery whose origins date back to 1608, when Hieronymous Manincor built the winery on land endowed to him by the Emperor for his service to Austria (though the winery is in Italy, the area is call Sud Tyrol (south Tyrol) for it's fluid boundaries over the centuries. Man-in-cor translates as Hand-on-heart, and the family coat of arms reflects this idea.
In 1662 Hieronymous's grand-daughter married into Count Enzenberg's family - one of the most prominent families in Tyrol for the past 800 years - and the Enzenbergs have been running the winery ever since, buying it outright in 1978.
When Count Michael Goëss-Enzenberg took over in 1991, his aim was to produce top-quality grapes and to discontinue selling to the local cooperative in favor of producing Manincor estate wines. Initially efforts went into the improving grape quality by reducing yield following more natural/sustainable farming. By 1996 the quality was deemed sufficiently high to justify the first release of estate wines and the new production facility was first used.
At 125 acres of vineyards, Manincor is Sud Tyrol's largest winegrower which also vinifies its entire grape production. But it remains a family operation with charm and personality, and the family of Michael and Sophie Goëss-Enzenberg live on the estate to ensure it continues as such.
