Sparkling wine is not just for celebrations. They are the perfect
summer refresher as well, and are among the most food-friendly
wines in the world. Especially one such as this - the Gold Medal
winner at Madrid's "Salon del Vino". Perhaps even more prestigious,
this sparkling wine was a hit at the 4th of July pre-parade party
held at our shop in Grass Valley, CA. As such, it comes doubly
recommended! From the Penedes (PEN uh deez) area of Spain, just
South of Barcelona, and North of Tarragona. This region is home to
Spain's best sparkling wines (Cavas), and over 90% of the country's
Cavas are produced here.
Just as in Champagne, Spanish Cavas are a blend of grapes - but
the classic Catalan varieties are quite different, and even more
challenging to pronounce until you've practiced once or twice. The
Triumvirate of Cava varietals are Xarel-lo, Parellada and Macabeo.
I know, a challenge for our American tongues. But even if your
tongue can find its way around the grape names, be sure it finds
its way around this wine - it would be a shame to die without
