The Wine
Rare and difficult to find, this pinot is from the Dundee Hills, the area neighboring the winery. Named for its red soils, the Jory Hills vineyard was added to Willakenzie's vineyard holdings in 2000. The wine is surprisingly big, given the light, opaque color, sporting ripe fruit notes and a hefty 14.5% ABV which it supports effortlessly. In fact, I never suspected the alcohol level until I read the label!
Pair this versatile wine with a wide variety of all-season dishes, and particularly those with fruit reductions, mushrooms, and herbs fresh or dried. Drink now through 2026.
The Winery
Since its founding over 25 years ago, WillaKenzie Estate has been exactly the sort of winery I like to work with - family-owned and estate-driven, crafting wines that convey a sense of the specific plot on which they were grown. The Lacroute family sought to retire in 2016 and sold to another family-run business, the Jackson Family wine group, who is known for acquiring and respecting family businesses and their original winemaking vision.
The winery coined the moniker ‘Place Matters’— the Oregon growers' take on the French concept of terroir - which is also a reflection of their founder's Burgundian heritage. And it’s behind their approach to everything from start to finish.
Beginning with the name, WillaKenzie, which is the name for the ancient sedimentary soils on which our vines are planted. But the name also pays tribute to two of Willamette Valley’s major rivers - the Willamette and McKenzie - which appear as waves in the upper right and lower left of the winery's logo. The fleur-de-lis at the center of the logo pays homage to our founder, Bernard Lacroute’s, French heritage.
The winery is solar powered and certified Sustainable since 2008.
