The Wine
This Chardonnay comes from a high-altitude vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH). Planted in 2014, this is the first vintage from its fruit. One of the blocks at Cortada sits at 1,650 in elevation, the highest vineyard in the entire SLH appellation.
The 2017 vintage was ideal for SLH Chardonnay, with intermittent cool and warm weather, followed by a couple weeks of extreme heat long before the grapes were ready to be harvested. The wine was whole-cluster pressed and barrel-fermented in neutral oak where it aged for 16 months before bottling in 2019.
14.1% ABV 47 cases produced. Drink now through 2025
The Winery
The impressive resume of Winemaker Ed Kurtzman includes stints with Bernardus, Chalone and Testarossa. Ed is best known as the hand behind Roar Wines, but this is his own label. Very small production. He makes his wines in the low-rent part of industrial San Francisco. The number of apiring winemakers and sommeliers that Ed has mentored are simply too many to count. To say he has a generous streak is an understatement.
