The Wine

From the cooler northern region of Austria, grown in a vineyard with Loess* topsoils over a core of limestone - the element that elevates this wine above the winery's Loessterrassen Grüner Veltliner. Crisp & Lively, it dances on the palate. Trocken-level of dryness. A wine that will age well for several years, but I suggest drinking it now. Very versatile food wine!

The Winery

Phil Brundlmayer is the son of Josef, who began the eponymous family winery in 1980. Though Joef started from scratch, Philipp assumed and now manages the family business, including the winery and a total of 43 vineyard acres in Oestereich (Austria). The vineyards are mostly planted to Veltliner and many of them are listed among the best in the Krems Valley including Moosburgerin, Gebling, Tiefenthal, Vordernberg & Steingraben.

These vineyards are known for producing densely-flavored wines that are also vibrant and structured. In order to capture these qualities in the finished wine, Philipp prefers to keep himself in the background, letting the grapes and soil come through first and foremost.

Like many of the producers included in our curated portfolio, Brundlmayer eschews insecticides and herbicides and uses no chemical fertilizers. The vineyard work is done manually and the grapes are harvested by hand - and if you've ever seen the steep slopes of Austria's vineyards, you'd understand why this is really the only option for the Brundmayers - 'precipitous' hardly seems an adequate descriptor - "death-defying" is more apt!

*What are Loess Soils? A geologic term for a windborne sedimentary soil consisting of <20% clay and a combination of sand and silt. It is quite fine and is often loosely cemented by calcium carbonate (the chalky residual of seashells from many eons ago!) The proper pronunciation is "Less", but the international wine community so often uses the "LOW-ess" that it is listed as an acceptable alternate by many dictionaries.
