The Wine

Let's begin with the pronunciation for the obscure grape, Xarello, from Penedes in the Catalan region. It sounds roughly like 'cha-day-LOW' and while that may not produce a perfectly nuanced version of the word it is close enough to earn you some cred in any cellar in Penedes!

The wine itself is from a single plot in the family's bio-dynamic vineyards, which is full of white stones and chalky soils. At 25+ years old, the vines are well into their middle age, producing a wine that walks that beautiful space between tart and sweet, the tension that brings the imbiber back for another sip, and then another, until suddenly the whole bottle has, um, somehow evaporated. That's when you're thankful it's ABV is a modest 12.5%!

The Winery - "Women & Gods"

The history of Castell d’Age is tied to three generations of women: grandmother, mother and daughter. Catalan by birth but Swiss in spirit. Their winery is located in the "Alt Penedes" or upper Penedes, on the South-facing slope of the sacred mountain, Montserrat in a village so small I drove past the winery twice before I found the small little driveway.

The Women

First there was Aurelia Figueras, who breathed life into lands that belonged to her family for 50 years.
Her daughter, Anne Marie Comtesse started producing wines at their current facility, and moved the family vineyards to organic.
Olivia Junyent is the current generation leading the winery, and was kind enough to provide a long and informative tour during my visit, including a vineyard tour that included some seriously muddy offroading! Along with her brother, they are moving beyond organic to Biodynamic practices.
