The Wine
Arguably, Albariño (alba-REEN-yo) sees its highest expression in the Northwest Corner of Spain, just above Portugal, a region called Rias Baixas (REE-ahs BAY-zhass). The vineyards in this region are found on hillsides sloping toward the Atlantic ocean.
This California wine is also from a high-altitude vineyard that slopes toward an ocean. Both Rias Baixas and Arroyo Seco have given us Albariños that are elegant, crisply citrus-driven and mineral-laced, with no wood aging. But Arroyo Seco is warmer than Rias Baixas, allowing it to contribute another element to the wine's flavor profile - honeydew - before exiting the stage with a tantalizing saline finish!
Pair with fish, ceviche, shellfish, grilled anything topped with salsa verde, and summer salads. Approx 300 cases produced. Drink now through 2024.
The Winery
Chesebro (say "SCHEZZ" (rhymes with Fez) "bro") is a small family-owned winery in Monterey’s Carmel Valley. This boutique producer makes about 2,000 cases in any given vintage, consisting of 6-8 wines, each at 300 cases or less. Such homeopathic quantities are insanely difficult to fit into a traditional business plan – the sort where, at the end of the exercise, the numbers are printed in black ink instead of red. But taste their wines and you’ll be glad the Chesebro's persevere despite the odds!
Their property used to be a dairy farm where goats and sheep were raised, but the winemaker eventually returned to his roots and came to focus on wines crafted from his favorite grape varieties.
Chesebro's signature style is found in wines that see little or no new oak, allowing the vineyard's unique characteristics to take center stage. Chesebro also harvests a bit early to make sure high alcohol doesn’t mask any of the wine’s nuance he worked so hard to showcase. And the whole of his wines are held in balance by their naturally-occurring acidity.
