The Wine
This is the first release of "First Thing First" a classic Rhone blend from owner Dan Kravitz (see below). The wine is a blend of Grenache/Carignan/Syrah (60%/22%/18%) - a fairly standard cuvee for a Rhone Red. But the wine also comes with an interesting story - most of the crop was harvested at the intended time, targeting an ABV of about 14%. But then a critical piece of cellar equipment broke and put a halt to further picking. So the remaining grapes continued to ripen on the vine for more than a week before being harvested, fermented and blended in with the wine from the earlier picking.
The result is a brawny red wine with intense aromas of black raspberries, cassis, violets and graphite all accompanied by full-bodied richness, and tannins softened by two years in cask prior to bottling.
The alcohol is high (15%) but nicely balanced; the result is an undeniably alluring wine that pairs as well with bear rugs and fireplaces as summer BBQs and hot tubs. Sure to please fans of big, bold red wines.

The Winery
From 1980-2007, Dan Kravitz was a wine importer selling other people’s wine. In 2007 he decided to begin his own production, and bought 13.5 acres of Grenache vineyards in Roussillon. Rousillon is the French part of Catalonia, 20 miles from the Mediterranean and 20 miles from Spain.
The vines were planted on steep slopes of schist (the same soil type found in Spain's Priorat/Montsant region) - dark, sharp rocks are decomposing shale. Vineyards growing in schist lend a distinctive mineral character to the wine that is notably different from the earthiness of Cotes du Rhone wines from vineyards planted in flat valley floors with soils containing smooth white river stones.
To his original vineyard, Dan has now added another 15.2 acres of Grenache, 1.5 acres of Syrah, 3.6 acres of Carignan and 2.4 of Macabeu. As the increasingly prestigious Roussillon Appellation requires at least 3 varietals, Dan's basic bottling carries the Roussillon appellation on the label, a blend of 70% Grenache, with Syrah and Carignan. But this is Dan's flagship bottling, bearing the new Appellation “Maury Sec”, so designated because Maury was known for many decades as the home of dessert wines. Based on old vine Grenache, it also incorporates Syrah and Carignan.
Dan is happy that the wines have been well received both by the market and the press and that he is achieving his goal of a sustainable vineyard in one of France’s best (and best value!) Appellations.
