Pinot Gris (aka Pinot Grigio in Italy and Grauburbunder in Germany/Austria) is a genetic mutation of the red Pinot Noir grape that has just a light red color in its skins. The grape is more popular as a source for white wines (whose slight hint of color is often a good clue during blind tastings, btw!) but as you can see here, there's good cause for encouraging producers to leave the grapes on the skins a bit longer to achieve this beautiful pale salmon color!

Pinot Gris is one of the three grapes (along with Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc) allowed to be grown in the Reuilly area of the Loire Valley. At Domain Dykerhoff, there are only 1.5 acres planted to Pinot Gris, which is a shame, judging from the deliciousness found in this wine! Dyckerhoff's farming practices are certified sustainable by Terra Vitis.

The Wine

Crisp and refreshing yet satsifyingly full with a fruity nose, great length and freshness on the palate with strawberries, peach skin and nice mineral complexity. Warning - this wine seems to evaporate from the glass and you will SWEAR you only had a few sips.
