Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2020 Etna Bianco, Sicily
. The first wine in our Italian tasting kit comes from the far Southern part of Italy, on the island of Sicily. The vineyard's high altitude on the North-East side of Mt Etna combines with the black volcanic soils to produce a most distinctive, mineral-driven wine that is now the darling of Sommeliers from East to West.
Vigneti Massa Sentieri 2015 Barbera, Piemonte
. The second wine in our tasting kit hails from the opposite end of Italy - the country's Northwest region of Piemonte. Best known for the wines of Brunello and Barbaresco, fans of the Barbera grape know it shows its best stuff in Piemonte, but especially when raised by the talented hands of Walter Massa. This is a wine that is easy to love. It pairs well with cheeses, salumi and pasta with red sauce.
Castellucio 2012 Ronco Dei Ciliegi, Emilia-Romagna
. This wine is from a region due North of Florence and South of Verona, and near Modena (known for its balsamic) and Parma (famed for its ham, Grana and Parmigiana). The 2012 Sangiovese offers a rare chance to taste a wine now at its peak. Drink now through the end of the year.
Voliero 2015 Brunello di Montalcino
. Without a doubt, Brunellos are some of Italy's greatest reds. But this was not always the case - the city was a thriving merchant town for centuries, benefitting from being on the main route followed by those on a pilgimage to Rome. But when the highway system bypassed the city, its collapse was fast and nearly complete. Montalcino's rise to the highest levels of fine wine is a great story. And speaking of stories, the winged figure on the label represents the winemaker's own story - crafting wines for Uccelliera, a top Brunello producer whose label depicts a caged bird. For his own label, Cortonesi wanted to represent the freedom granted by crafting his own wine. BTW, most of the wine was intended for sale in his restaurant in nearby Sienna. But then COVID. A sliver lining for us.
