The Wine
Pale, with an almost greenish tinge, though the wine is barely colored. Look for floral white-blossom aromatics and notes of citrus zest (grapefruit and lemon) with typical flinty, mineral base. Bright crisp acidity provides tension and backbone to the ripe flavors of melon, pear and almonds. Wonderfully versatile with food, this wine is as serious or playful as you would like.
'Petit Chablis' parcels are mostly found on the crowns of the hills throughout the Chablis appellation.
Historically, the fruit from these vines was difficult to ripen due to rocky soils and higher/cooler elevations. But climate change has removed this barrier (just as it has made the warmest regions obsolete for growing fine wines).
Today, these Petit Chablis parcels produce some of the purest, most striking mineral-driven expressions of the Chardonnay grape. Drink now through 2022.
The Winery
In 1967, Michel Laroche took control of the Laroche family estate that had been in his family since the 1600's. Then in 2010 he sold his family brand, kept his 50 acres of vineyards and started Le Domaine d'Henri, an homage to his father, Henri Laroche.
He runs his modern facility in an old world style, and by that I mean he combines tradtitional methods with modern sensibilities to assure sustainability. For example, he relies on indigenous yeasts to begin fermentation naturally, malo-lactic fermentation occurs naturally, but temperature-controlled stainless steel vats give them control over the pace of fermentation. Like many modern Chablis producers, they do rely on large barrels (600L instead of the traditional 250L size) to soften their wines, and believes bottling should not adhere to a schedule but rather occur when the wine is ready - often spending a year in vat and another in barrel.
