The Wine
The grapes in this wine were grown biodynamically in calcareous soils that are known for producing elegant wines. Add to that... the wine is designated as 'Extra Brut', so drier and crisper than a wine bearing the far more common 'Brut' designation. And finally... it spent a relatively short 18months on the lees after the secondary fermentation in the bottle.
Combine all these factors and you get a crisp and refreshing wine that is as comfortable as a dinner companion as it is celebrating the latest excuse for popping a cork - you know, big life events like "I made it through Wednesday" (always a good reason).
The Winery
The Raventós i Blanc estate is comprised on over 200 acres of woodlands and vineyards. It was founded in 1497 (note the label watermark of the same yera) and has been passed on through the family ever since.
It was Josep Raventós Fatjó, who made the first Cava in 1872. Over 100 years later, in 1984, Josep-Maria Raventós I Blanc changed the strategic direction of the winery, focusing on high quality wines that compete on a competitive world stage.
A New Sparkling Wine Region
Today, the father-son team of Manuel and Pepe Raventós (Josep-Maria’s son and grandson) work side by side, continuing the prestigious lineage of this remarkable estate. Which brought them to a difficult decision in 2012 - tired of the decline in quality of wines of the Cava DO, or Denominación de origen (dominated by the three top producers) they left the Cava DO to create a new designation, the CONCA DEL RIU ANOIA - PENEDÈS.
To put this DO on their label, a producer must adhere to strict viticultural standards and grow the unique, indigenous grape varieties that express the unique characteristics of the soils.
