The Wine
Other than the 2018 wildfires that devastated parts of Mendocino County, it’s hard to imagine a more ideal vintage in Anderson Valley. Due to the unique position between two protective ranges, the valley escaped the fires and any related smoke taint. In addition, the growing season was long and warm, resulting in wines with an immediate, head-snapping appeal that extends long into the evening as it evolves into the wine equivalent of a great conversation.
WINE GEEK STUFF: The Rhoda Pinot Noir is Reeve's tribute to the special characteristics of deep-end Anderson Valley Pinot - the part of the valley that is closest to the ocean, at the Northwestern end of the AVA, making it the coolest part of the region. The wine blends grapes from three deep-end vineyards: Kiser (62%), Tanbark Mill (32%) and Wendling (5%) which were crafted into nine fermentation lots made up of six clonal selections: 115 (Kiser and Wendling vineyards), Martini (Tanbark), 777 (Kiser), 114 (Kiser), 667 (Wendling and Kiser), 828 (Tanbark and Wendling). The final blend has 18% whole cluster fermentation influence. It was aged for 15 months in mix of new (22%) and neutral oak barrels.
The Winery
Noah and Kelly Dorrance are the collaborative behind Reeve Wines, a simple Midwestern couple who fell in love with each other, then travelled the world and fell in love with wine. Long story short, they eventually moved to Northern California to build a life together in our wine country.
Fast forward to 2009 and we see Noah partnering with friends to launch the explosively successful Banshee wine brand (one of our wine club selections in 2009, BTW).
In 2015 he leveraged Banshee's success and the connections he'd made to launch a premium brand, and in 2015 he and Kelly launched Reeve Wines, named for their first child. What began as a creative outlet to soon grew to be something so singular it refused to be relegated to a side project.
Noah spearheads Reeve’s winemaking and production with the support of talented winemakers Ross Cobb (Cobb Wines, Hirsch, Flowers, Williams Selyem) and Katy Wilson (LaRue, Kamen, Flowers). Chops.
Meanwhile, Kelly masterminds the estate’s design and hospitality program. Her background in business and design provides a counterpoint to Noah’s maverick instinct. Noah and Kelly have merged their individual strengths to build a legacy their kids, Reeve and Remy, will one day inherit.
