The Wine
A blend of 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, Roederer Estate’s winemaking style is based on two elements:
Ownership of its own vineyards, and
The addition of oak-aged reserve wines to each year’s blend or cuvée.
Only the cuvée (the first 120 gallons/ton) is used, not the bitter / harsh juice from a more firm pressing, which is immediately fermented in Stainless Steel tanks at 65 degrees to preserve freshness of aromatics and flavors. Malolactic fermentation is avoided or minimal, depending on the vintage,as the house style leans towards one of crisp, age-worthy wines.
Roederer Estate Brut is crisp and elegant with complex pear, spice and hazelnut flavors. It is fresh and lightly fruity with great finesse and depth of flavor. The wine is stored for two years prior to being released at the optimal time for your enjoyment. 12.5% ABV
The Winery
In the late 1970's, the great Champagne house Louis Roederer searched all of California to the find land most suitable for producing their U.S. version of sparkling wine. In 1982, after their extensive search was complete, Roederer Estate was established.
With this property, nestled in Mendocino County’s fog-shrouded, Anderson Valley, the California property of Champagne Louis Roederer builds upon their centuries-old tradition. The area's proximity to the Pacific ocean gives rise to a gentle cycle of warm days and cool nights, allowing grapes to mature slowly, developing full varietal character. Across the state, they are typically among the last wineries to harvest grapes that are intended for sparkling wine production.
Among the very few California sparkling wine houses that only sources estate-grown fruit, Roederer Estate is meticulous about all its farming decisions. From their in-depth knowledge of vineyard soils to introducing the open lyre trellis system or high-density vine spacing (both being common in the Champagne region). This high-touch approach to farming has led them to farm organically and biodynamically, and to painstakingly track grape maturity to achieve perfect balance at harvest.
