The WineThe wine is brilliant: this youthful wine is now showing a tightly woven texture with a luminous and athletic character and a youthful grippiness. The owners describe it as "showing all the effortless beauty of a Greek sculpture". With age, the wine will develop a soft suppleness, a sustained richness with a more intimate and resounding experience.
The Maganazzi is one of the three finest Crus of the Castiglione di Sicilia township, the largest on the North side of the Etna appellation. In 2007, Tenuta della Terre Nere purchased a small vineyard in this region and donated the two barrels to a local children's hospital with labels designed by the owner's 2 year-old daughter. The wine remained as such until a few years ago, when he bought an adjacent parcel and purchased grapes from a third. This 2017 is the inaugural vintage of this Magazzani wine.
98% Nerello mascalese, 2% Nerello cappuccio. These 80 year-old vines produced just 250 cases.
The Winery
As Italian wineries go, this is a youngster, as its first vintage was in 2002. Since then, however, it has led the charge as Etna wineries have become darlings of the Sommelier crowd. Like the region, the winery leverages two characteristics that make their wines notable - the black volcanic soils and the regional grape known as 'Nerello Mascalese' - a grape producing wines whose earthy characteristics have been described as showcasing "moon rock" (though the number of people who have ever had the opportunity to lick a moon rock is miniscule, it's the idea that counts, right?)
