The Wine
"Montepulciano" is the name of
a
city in Tuscany
, where the Sangiovese grape is used to make the regional wines (Brunello di Montepulciano and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano).
But it is also the name of a grape from Abruzzo
- an entirely different wine region. In the Abruzzo area you'll see wine labels that identify both the grape and the region, as in this "Montepulciano d'Abruzzo".
But this wine is a very unique rendering of the classic red wine from Abruzzo because it undergoes carbonic maceration (fermentation that begins inside the grape, before crushing). Open a bottle and enthusiastic aromas billow from the glass like a happy extrovet. The aromas deliver pleasant notes of cherry and strawberry jam, a bit of smoke, dried herbs and forest floor. With its crunchy red fruits, moderate tannins and zippy acidity, this wine will be a hit with lovers of 'natural' wines but more importantly, it will pique the interest of any curious wine lover.
The Winery
(Dave's note - to picture where this winery is located, Abruzzo forms the calf of the 'boot' that is Italy. So - upper-middle on the Eastern side.)
Terraviva is a family-owned, certified organic and biodynamic farm near Teramo, Abruzzo. The winery's tag line - "Vini Vista Mare" - reflects the ocean views enjoyed while standing in their vineyard or hospitality facility. Their vineyards benefit from both the cold winds blowing down from the Gran Sasso mountains and the mitigating effects of the Adriatic Sea.
Winemaking is essential / low-intervention: just estate-grown, organic & biodynamic grapes and natural yeast fermentations. Only minimal amounts of sulfites are used at bottling. All plots are harvested separately yielding wines of crisp, clear varietal character, vibrant freshness and remarkable balance.
