The WineMauzac is an obscure grape, and it's Limoux’s calling card - a grape that is found nowhere else. And it's what makes this wine (and its 'apple-ation') uniquely interesting to wine lovers.
Chardonnay. Pinot Noir. Chenin Blanc. They've all contributed to the incredible rise of global sparkling wines in recent decades. But it is Mauzac's green apple aromas that makes it a wonderful addition to the list of global sparkling wines - not the golden delicoius roundness of Prosecco, but something worthy of conversation at the dinner table. This wine is unpretentious and hugely satisfying - gentle, easy and suave, with perfectly judged dosage.
The Producer
A few years back, Vergnes' patriarch - Jean-Marc Vergnes - met an untimely death at a young age. His widow, Isabelle, wanted to carry on but eventually needed to take on new partners, as she found it impossible to balance the business with the demands of her young family. As you can see, the quality has continued on.
The Appellation
Historic researchers can argue over where sparkling wine was first "invented", but Limoux would be on the short list, estimates place it at 100+ years before Champagne. Its limestone soils and markedly cooler climate make it a perfect locale for such an endeavor. The price-quality ratio is absolutely fantastic.
