The Wine
Clean and very pretty Barbera, a grape that often produces course and affordable cafe wines served in carafe. This wine is able to take the high road because of the quality of the fruit and the wine-making technique - spontaneously fermented in Stainless Steel and using minimal sulphur, the wine offers head-snapping pleasure beginning with the first sniff. From the aromas, the taster knows what is to follow - cherry, delicate florals (violet) and some sweet spice notes that are from the grape, not wood (no barrel contact here!). A high expression of Barbera - at once juicy and refreshing, full but gentle, and offering immediate pleasure.
I encourage wine lovers to experiment with wine pariings they enjoy rather than provide pairing suggestions which can seem intimidating, I've learned. But for the maximum enjoyment of this wine, serve it with all but the richest of dishes, from salumi and cheese to rich fish to roast poultry or pork. Also a fine choice for many, many vegetarian options.
The Winery
The story of this wine begins with Walter Massa, a legend among Piemontese Barbera growers! As a quick aside - Walter is famous for his robust personality, the sort of hands-on farmer that isn't opposed to taking a break from his routine to spend hours with visitors - but he's also famous for his tireless efforts to save local grape varieties that have become nearly extinct. But he doesn't talk about himself, only about the greatness of the Colli Tortonesi region, where he is well known. When Walter's first-time visitors get lost, they can just start asking for directions about 60 miles away - everyone knows and loves him, from the gas station attendant to the mayor.
He is also known for the magic he brings to his award-winning Barberas like this one. Barbera is a grape that achieves its highest ambitions in the Piemonte area. And Massa's Barberas have won too many awards to count.
Sentieri is the Italian word for "Trails", and this wine is named for the trails between the vines of Monleale (about 80 miles East of Turin in the South-Eastern corner of Piemonte, for those who can picture this region in their heads), the epicenter for the local wines. The area is known for calcareous soils which provides the mineral notes in this wine crafted by Massa from fifty year-old vines.
