The Wine
You may recall the Gruner Veltliner craze of the late 90's that gave rise to the Gru Vee nickname? Do you think Ro Vee will take off in the same way? It might, but for the rarity of the grape, which makes it difficult to find outside of the Wagram area of Austria. But it is one of Austria's autocthonous grapes (meaning "indigenous", but it sounds cooler! Pronounced awe-TOCK-thone-us).
"Roter" is the Austrian word for Red, so this is a white wine from a red grape, crushed and immediately separated from the skins. Look for a complex wine - orange blossoms on the nose, a broad palate and slightly bitter almond notes on the finish, offset by the wine's sweet fruit notes - a true bitter-sweet experience, but in a good way.
The Winery
Preisinger-Reinberger is a family owned and operated winery situated in the heart of the Wagram wine region not far from Vienna. The unique loess soil combined with different microclimates produce fruity and most of all
spicy
wines.
Mordthal is one of the best sites for growing vines in the Wagram region due to its south-west exposed slopes and the unique soil consisting of loess and gravel. “Mordthal”, which translates as “murder valley”, has a fierce history as evidenced by the discoveries of Mammoth bones dating back to the stone ages when hunters would force Mammoths into the valley where they could be more easily slaughtered.
Today Mordthal is well known and valued by wine lovers from all over for elegant, complex and flavorful wines – especially the Roter Veltliner which is a unique identifier of the region. Tourists can taste the local wines while overlooking the rolling, vine-covered hills from the Mammoth Hut in the little town of Rupperstahl. If you go, I suggest you forget the gruesome purpose of the stone-age vallley and soak in the stunning beauty from your perch in the tasting hut.
The vineyards are situated nearby to the winery on the terraces of the Wagram hills. The soils are mainly built of some 10ft tall deposits of loess – a fine sediment mixed up from silica minerals and lime. Due to its capability of buffering water it is a perfect base for vinification. Work in the vineyards is carried out with a high amount of hand labour saving nature’s resources. Preisinger-Reinberger resigns to use pesticides and focuses on green areas in the vineyards to promote diversity and useful animals.
