The Wine

Have you noticed? Cabernet Franc is surging in popularity. Styles range from the bell pepper-scented Loire style to the lush Napa style you have here, which takes its lead from the right bank Bordeaux wines, solidly in between the two styles.

This particular version is among the best I've tasted, showing aromas of black currant and Bing cherry layered into Rutherford's textbook cocoa powder. Spice and mineral nuances that distinguish Cabernet Franc from the other Bordeaux varieties lend complexity (look for notes of sage, cinnamon and graphite). Drink now through 2027.

The Rutherford area earned its lofty reputation in the last century when winemaker/mentor/advocate Andre Tchelistcheff (chell eh cheff) was quoted as saying "It takes Rutherford Dust to grow great Cabernet - and today the term has become an accepted descriptor for the unique characteristics found in Cabernet from this special part of Napa.

The Winery

A family-owned vineyard and winery, Wm Harrison farms high-quality grapes for these small-production Napa Valley wines. Since 1993, the Harrisons have produced all five Bordeaux varieties on a nine-acre ranch in Napa Valley's famed Rutherford appellation (think Corison, Whitehall Lane, Hall, Niebaum Coppola, Beaulieu Vineards...). Including their Carneros Chardonnay, the winery's annual output is still only 2,000 cases.
