And speaking of taste (and aromas, which lend more to the flavor experience than our comparatively lazy taste buds do) this wine packs quite a surprise given its affordable, budget-coddling price tag! Though the Spanish "Monastrell" version of this wine differs from its French "Mourvedre" twin, it is still true to the varietal no matter what one calls it. In Southern France, Mourvedre plays a starring role in the pricey (and worth it!) wines from Bandol.
As is typical of this grape, you'll find loads of dark fruit and smoked wood chip aromas, but also a most tantalizing hint of lavender and maybe a hint of roses, along with some mineral aromas that remind me of wet slate. Complexity such as this normally comes at a much higher price!
